Photograph of the door lintel of a shrine of the Navalinga temple at Kukkunur, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s. Kukkunur is situated in the modern state of Karnataka in an area that was known as the Dharwar district when this photograph was taken. The construction of the Navalinga temple dates to the late 9th century when the temple was built in the Late Chalukya style. The complex is situated in a courtyard and consists of nine shrines covered by a multi-storey square tower which are built around three columned porches. The shrines were originally dedicated to a variety of female deities. The outer walls of the temples are relatively unadorned and have niches framed by pilasters surmounted by a miniature temple roof and carvings representing makaras (aquatic monsters). The lintels of the shrine doorways are carved makaras or aquatic monsters, flying figures and garlands.

Kaiser Friedrich III 1885
Cabinet card
Private collection of T. Max Hochstetler LL/25001
The dating of this card is problematic as it is embossed with the date 1885 but Kaiser Friedrich III was only emperor for a few months in 1888 after the death of his father Wilhelm I. The card is clearly labelled and embossed and it may be that the Schaarwachter studio embossed them according to the date that the photographs were taken rather than the date the cabinet card was issued.
Thanks to T. Max Hochstetler and Dr Robin Lenman for their comments on this photograph.

Photogravure 18.5 x 24.0 cm
Photoseed
Photograph courtesy PhotoSeed.com LL/12261
It is not certain who took this photograph. Anita Ventura Mozley (1977) in her book Thomas Annan: Photographs of The Old Closes And Streets of Glasgow 1868/1877 (With a supplement of 15 related views) (New York: Dover Publications, Inc.) says on p.VI of her introduction: "Annan died in 1887; it is possible, but not likely, that he took the photograph dated 1885 (with its "Funeral Office" sign) that is reproduced as Plate 50 in the gravure edition."
This plate was included in:
The Old Closes & Streets of Glasgow. Engraved by Annan from photographs taken for the City of Glasgow Improvement Trust. With an introduction by William Young. It was published in 1900 from an edition of 100 by the Glasgow firm of James MacLehose & Sons.
