Sumner & Son, Northfield
Northfield MN Jesse James bank robbery site 1876
Gelatin silver print
Be-Hold
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (49 / 41) LL/18526
A corner view of the block containing, at the rear of its left face, the First National Bank of Northfield, scene of the famous 1876 raid by Jesse James and the Youngers, in which gang members were killed or captured.
This is an early 4" x 6" gelatin-silver print with the backstamp of Sumner Studio, the photograph studio in Northfield at the time of the raid.
A booklet about the raid, published by the Northfield News in 1933, is included in this lot. It contains a reproduction of an early view of this same block, but the present photograph is clearly much earlier. The photograph is stained and edges are tattered. This came from a house in Northfield, that included the following lots. (Larry Gottheim)

Bob Younger, Jesse James Gang 1876
Gelatin silver print 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 in
Be-Hold
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (49 / 42) LL/18527
One of the Younger brothers captured in the raid. 3 ¢" x 2 +" gelatin-silver print on a 5 ¢" x 4 +" gray mount, with the blindstamp for Sumner & Son, Northfield on the mount bottom, slightly entering the print area (i.e. the stamp was applied after the print was mounted.) Sumner was the photographer in Northfield at the time of the attempted robbery. "Bob Younger" is written in pen above the print, and in another hand on verso.
These images were probably originally issued by the Sumner Studio as CDV's. This is a slight variant of a CDV in a group, 2 of which were by A F. Burnham, Fairbault, Minn. They sold at Swann Galleries in October 1999 for $39,100. That group was said to be identified by Cole Younger in his hand. (Larry Gottheim)

Jim Younger, Jesse James Gang 1876
Gelatin silver print 3 5/8 x 2 1/4 in
Be-Hold
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (49 / 43) LL/18528
Another of the Younger brothers of the Jesse James gang captured in the 1876 Northfield raid. 3 5/8" x 2 +" gelatin-silver print on a 5 ¢" x 4 +" gray mount, with the Sumner & Son blindstamp. "Jim Younger" is written in pen above the print, and in another hand on verso. Jim is shown with his bloody shirt and still-bleeding mouth wound. The CDV in the Swann lot shows Jim later, after he was cleaned up and put in a jacket. (Larry Gottheim)

Bill Styles, Jesse James Gang 1876
Gelatin silver print 3 1/4 x 2 1/8 in
Be-Hold
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (49 / 44) LL/18529
This was the alias of William Chadwell, one of the Jesse James Younger Brothers gang who was killed in the 1876 raid. 3 +" x 2 1/8" gelatin-silver print on a 5 ¢" x 4 +" gray mount with the Sumner & Son blindstamp. He has been propped up showing the blood stains under the bullet hole. "Styles" written in pen above the print. This is the same image as one of the CDV's in the Swann Lot, that were probably made by Sumner. (Larry Gottheim)

Charlie Pitts, James Gang 1876
Gelatin silver print 3 1/8 x 2 1/8 in
Be-Hold Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (49 / 47) LL/18532
Captured during the failed Northfield bank robbery attempt by Jesse James and the Younger gang. He is shown without his shirt. This is the same image as the CDV by Burnham in the Swann Lot.
3 1/8" x 2 1/8" gelatin-silver print on 5 ¢" x 4 +" gray mount with Sumner & Son blindstamp. "Pitts" written in pen above the print. "Chadwick" in another hand in pencil on verso. Some letters in pencil on the print. (Larry Gottheim)
