Born Marie Constance Sasse on 26 January 1834, the Belgian soprano made her début at Venice as Gilda in 1852. At the onset of her career she changed her name to Sax, then to Saxe when the instrument maker Adolphe sued her; when he sued again, she reverted to Sasse and was later known as Sass.
In 1859 she sang Eurydice at the ThéÔtre-Lyrique in the historic revival of Gluck's Orphée et Eurydice, in Berlioz's version, with Pauline Viardot-Garcia as Orpheus. Engaged at the Paris-Opéra from 1860 to 1877, she sang Elisabeth in the revised Tannhõuser (1861) and created Sélika in L'Africaine (1865) and Elisabeth de Valois in Don Carlos (1867).
Wagner was pleased with her Elisabeth in Tannhõuser but Verdi, who disliked her attitude to colleagues at rehearsal, was less pleased with her heroine in Don Carlos. When she was recommended for Amneris in Aida, he refused.
Married, briefly, to the bass Armand Castelmary, she retired in 1877. Her memoirs Souvenirs d'une artiste were published in Paris in 1902. She died on 8 November 1907

With the title and date, in ink, and NÞgre's name in the printed decorative border on mount recto.
From the Bert Hartkamp Collection, Amsterdam; to the present owner in 2003.
This photograph depicts the prison where the notorious man with the iron mask was incarcerated. The legends surrounding this mysterious prisoner, including Alexander Dumas''s classic novel, continue to this day in films, poetry, television programs, and theatrical works.
In the 19th century, however, Parisians believed that the masked prisoner was actually the twin brother of King Louis XIV, imprisoned because he was seen as a threat to the throne. His mask was maintained under penalty of death to prevent anyone from knowing his true identity. The question of who his patrimony was also greatly debated, with the possibilities including the Duke of Buckingham, a monk called Fiacre, Louis XIII, and Cardinal Mazarin. Most believed his mother was Queen Anne of Austria, the wife of Louis XIII.
Colorful stories associated with the figure were perpetuated by writers no less than Voltaire, who wrote that the masked man had tried to communicate his true identity to the outside world by writing on a silver plate and throwing it from his prison window to the river running beside the Bastille. Popular myth perpetuated the notion he wore an iron helmut-like mask with a moveable, hinged jaw. Later research revealed that, in fact, the mask was made of black velvet.

"At the western end of the Cathedral, apart from the main building, as may be seen in a previous view, this beautiful and unique structure, called the Galilee, is situated. It was erected by Bishop Pudsey, in 1160, after having failed to erect a lady chapel.
It is composed of five narrow aisles, each fifty feet long, and about sixteen wide, formed by light clustered columns, supporting semi-circular arches, and ornamented with a rich zig-zag moulding. The general effect of the arrangement of this structure is unrivalled in this country.
Near the entrance is the plain monument which covers the remains of the 'Venerable Bede

Horizontal Screw Engines of the Steam Yacht Brilliant, by Messrs. Day and Co., Southampton 1865
Engraving
Google Books LL/35257
John Bourne A Catechism of the Steam Engine in its various Applications to Mines, Mills, Steam Navigation and Agriculture; with Practical Instructions for the Manufacture and Management of Engines of Every Class (London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, & Green, 1865), p. fig.58. Messrs. Day & Co.
The screw engine of Messrs. Day & Co. of Southampton is also of the horizontal steeple variety, but in most of the details it is the most judiciously arranged engine I have met with. A representation of Messrs. Day's engine is given in fig. 58, which is engraved from a photograph of the engines of the steam screw yacht Brilliant, of 100 horse power, constructed by Messrs. Day. This vessel is 191 ft. long, 21 ft. broad, and of 419 tons builder's measurement. There are two engines, each with a cylinder 40 in. diameter, and 2 ft. stroke; and with a pressure of steam in the boiler of 20 Ibs., and a vacuum in the condenser of 27 in. of mercury. The engines make 90 revolutions per minute, and exert 510 horse power. Fig. 59 contains two indicator diagrams taken from one of the engines, one diagram being taken from the cylinder on one side of the piston and the other diagram from the other side.
